Project Overview
Heffron’s relationship with Georgetown University spans nearly nine decades — one of the longest continuous client relationships in the firm’s history. Across that time, the work has reached nearly every building type the university operates, from historic campus landmarks to modern academic and utility infrastructure.
One of the most demanding assignments in that long-running relationship was the installation of three new 3,000-ton chillers — 9,000 tons of added cooling capacity — while the central plant remained fully operational. The hospital and campus had to function at 100% throughout the work, making every shutdown window, tie-in sequence, and commissioning milestone mission critical. Heffron planned and executed the installation so the plant never lost the reliability the campus depended on.
The project was delivered on time, under budget, and recognized with the Washington Building Congress Star Award for Complexity and Achievement in 2004. It remains a clear example of the kind of work Georgetown has trusted Heffron to perform for generations: high-stakes mechanical construction inside live institutional environments where failure is not an option.
